Estero Azul
About This Spot
Estero Azul feels like a tucked-away treasure where the rhythm of the waves keeps time with a laid-back, unhurried pace. Nestled just steps from Playa Flamingo’s shoreline, it offers a welcome refuge from the typical tourist trail—where the sand brushes softly against your feet and the sea breeze carries the day's freshest catches straight to your table. This is a place where the setting sun colors both the sky and your mood, inviting you to pause and simply be present.
The atmosphere here is quietly vibrant yet unpretentious, a blend of local familiarity and genuine warmth. It’s the kind of spot where laughter mingles with the sound of fishermen bringing in their haul, and where friendly neighborhood cats roam alongside hungry visitors, all drawn by the promise of honest, thoughtful cooking. Conversations flow easily over shared plates and cold drinks, the mood never rushed, always intimate.
Dining at Estero Azul is much more than a meal—it’s an immersion into the flavors and textures of the Pacific coast, presented with unassuming skill and care. You might find yourself savoring a briny ceviche that tastes of ocean breezes or a generous seafood platter rich with garlic butter and local bounty, each bite telling a story of the sea and the people who know it best. Traditional fare, made with fresh, local ingredients, complements radiant views and that rare feeling of beachfront solitude.
In its relaxed simplicity, Estero Azul invites you to slow down and enjoy the small, joyful moments: the crunch of plantain chips with dip, the warmth of the sun fading behind the hills, the gentle sway of a hammock just a few steps from your chair. It’s an unpolished gem where authenticity comes alive—not just in the food, but in the rhythm of everyday life by the water’s edge.

Yum! We came here while doing beach hopping with our guide. Probably the best place we ate at while in Costa Rica. Had the seafood platter with garlic butter. It was huge and full of seafood. Big shrimp, little shrimp, octopus and a fish filet with a salad and some fries. Delicious! Had hammocks to relax in. Great views watching the fisherman bring in their fresh catches.

Off the beaten path exceptional food!!! Cosada with fish, the calamari with butter, plantain chips with bean dip and guacamole. All were delicious!

Amazing experience here!! My wife and I came to Costa Rica for a week to celebrate our Anniversary and we frequented this place multiple times and each time it was wonderful! Everything from the traditional Costa Rican breakfast to the whole snapper for dinner. Everything was excellent and the view is truly breathtaking. Also much cheaper than other high end beach front restaurants and the view is even better because you can sit several yards from the water.

Estero Azul Restaurant is one of the few places that survived the new ordinance requiring businesses to be 100m from the shoreline. Here, you can sit with your feet in the sand and listen to the waves rolling up the beach. The food is excellent — fresh, local cuisine that’s both delicious and authentic. Service is friendly and efficient, and prices are very reasonable for the quality. If you’re in the area, skip the crowded tourist spots and head here instead — you’ll meet locals, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, and experience Costa Rica the way it should be.

Low key hard to find down a dirt road but super casual and affordable. Their ceviche was loaded with seafood and light on flavor with real tortilla chips. The chicken rice and beans were tasty. The mixed seafood dish was good. Beautiful sunset and friendly neighborhood cats. Very friendly staff too! They take credit card and apple pay.

Food is authentic, homemade, fresh, delicious. Went two nights in a row. Best meal we had Costa Rica. Family run on the water. Highly recommend to someone looking for a good homemade filing meal. Can be tricky to find. Look for unpaved road off a bend in main road. Go down to the end.

Estero Azul is a great local spot near Flamingo and Brasilito Beach. The food was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Service was normal—nothing fancy—but friendly and thoughtful. The gentleman even brought me mosquito repellent right away without me having to ask, which was a nice touch. After trying a few expensive restaurants and local sodas over the past few days, this has been the best so far. We ordered the typical plate soup, fish, calamari, and shrimp—everything was outstanding. Even the beer was ice cold! We enjoyed it so much that we’re coming back tomorrow morning for breakfast. Highly recommend.
